Methodology

How it works

Every episode on AnimeExplore gets exactly one classification. Here's what each label means, where the data comes from, and how accurate it is.

Legend

The five classifications

Canon

Canon

Directly adapts the source manga (or is otherwise part of the core story). Watch all of it.

Filler

Filler

Original episodes created to let the manga get ahead. Self-contained side stories are safe to skip entirely.

Mixed

Mixed canon/filler

Mostly filler, but includes some canon material. Skip if you want pure speed; watch if you want zero gaps.

Manga canon

Manga canon

Adapts the source material but adds anime-original scenes. Core story, padded runtime.

Recap

Recap

A summary of earlier episodes. Only worth watching if you need a refresher after a long break.

Where the data comes from

  • Layer 1: source API: community-maintained filler and recap flags, fetched through a public catalogue API and snapshotted into the repo every day by CI.
  • Layer 2: curated: human-reviewed corrections, per show, stored in the repo. Curated always wins on conflict. Mixed and manga-canon classifications come from this layer.

Accuracy notes

Source flags are community-maintained and occasionally disagree with the manga timeline. When they do, the curated layer fixes them. You can help by reporting a wrong flag. Every list shows its "Last updated" date so you know how fresh it is.

The fine print

"Filler" is a judgment call, not physics. A few filler arcs are genuinely fun (we'd never stop you from watching them). Our job is to tell you which episodes move the story and which ones do not. The decision is yours.
